Hello

We would like to go out and see the birds. Mainly the puffins. Who do I e-mail to make reservations to go out by boat and stay for the afternoon then go back? I read the boat goes out at 11am and returns 14:00.
Which gives us approximately 3 hours to see the birds. Does the boats go out on Sundays? We are visiting our family in Ireland and was told this was a must see. Please let us know as we leave the first week of June. We would like to add it to our itinerary.
Thank you.

Jeanette

Your website is very interesting. I read about the islands in a guide book and definitely plan to visit early May, 2008. The website is so informative regarding the history of the island. I am looking forward to our visit.

Like many other visitors to your site, I just “googled” Saltee Islands, expecting to see may be a map and couple of photos.

BUT NO, I DID NOT get a couple of pictures and a map: I got a fully fledged, detailed, and extremely interesting website on the Islands. Congratulations and many thanks to respect your father Michael the First wish and share virtually and in real life this magnificent place with the rest of the world. I am a French man married to a Galwaygian woman and leave in Enniscorthy for the last 15 years. We have friends in Kilmore Quay and often enjoyed a delicious Crab Morney in Kehoe’s. I also love photography and have just bought a 5 m. (5 persons) boat. This is the reason why I “googled” the Saltees. Looking at your website has tremendously increased my desire to visit your islands. I can not wait to get delivery of my boat and get some fine weather to try the crossing. The only thing your website made me even more worried about the crossing, looking at the list of wrecks lying around of the Islands. I would not like to be the next entry on the list.

Is a small speed boat with an outboard engine, OK to go to the Islands??? Do I need to go with someone very experienced ? Or is this OK with some precautions, depth finder, local knowledge, (obviously good sea and weather conditions)…Where and which Island is the best to land on ?Is it better at high tide or low tide??? Could you please advise me.

My parents are visiting from France from the 22/03/08 to the 12/04/08, and I will love them to visit your Island. Thank you again to the Neale family for your effort and willingness to share your “Treasure” (Island) and well done for your very educational, clear website. I have myself developed couple of website for my company and for some friends and know the work it is involved. Looking forward to read you soon and/or visit your Island. I will hopefully forward you shortly some photos of the Islands.

 Best regards,

Thank you for your magnificent website, which lets me "visit" from California. I look forward to visiting someday, and am grateful to the Neale family. Having just read Airman, I suspect your web site will have many visitors in the near future. Thank you again. I went to the internet hoping to find a map, and was stunned at the beauty & thoroughness of your web site... and the islands themselves. - Amy G.

Very many thanks for permission to stay on Great Saltee. My son Cian and I had a very enjoyable week, with a mix of sun and cloud, winds never above force 4, and only ten minutes of drizzle at dawn one day. Bird migration was not particularly heavy (too much wind from the north) but we saw 63 different species, and ringed 180 birds, mostly Willow Warblers, Chiffchaffs and Goldcrests. Several unusual species turned up: a pair of Gadwall, a Spotted Redshank, a Hen Harrier seen coming in off the sea from the east, an Arctic Skua, a Yellow Wagtail and two Garden Warblers. And there was a very strange leucistic Gannet chick on the Makestone -- the colour of Rich Tea biscuits! Apparently only one previous record of this colour phase, at a Scottish colony in 1973. About 60% of the Gannet chicks had fledged, though there were still some with white down, which won't go until mid-October.

Besides the birds, we saw a Minke Whale and six dolphins passing by, and the Grey Seals had produced their first eight pups of the season. Quite a lot of migrant Red Admiral and Painted Lady butterflies, and up to twelve Migrant Hawker dragonflies per day. These were first recorded in Ireland in 2000 and are now established along the southeast coast. Actually, we started to see them on Great Saltee in 1998, two years before they were "officially" recorded in Ireland!

Kind regards

Oscar Merne

We visited the Great Saltee yesterday in the company of some friends and had a picnic. It was a magnificent day, one of the few this summer, and the island, wildlife and surrounding waters were at the their best. The Neale family deserve great praise for making such a wonderful amenity available to the public

Your web page is not good its magnificent and as I do my daughters web page not as proficiently as yours, I would request you permission to make links to your page as from my Saltee Information Page on the Guest House Page and also on the Community Page www.kilmorequayweb.com. I will go ahead and link and I trust you will not mind, it has been a sore point for a long time that the most visually important seascape off Kilmore Quay had no decent links.

Best Wishes Mick Maguire Quay Guest House Kilmore Quay.

Thank You for such a great lift on a dull day.
